Text Box: “We MUST Be Holy!”

What a great reminder of a truth that is often forgotten in modern “Christianity.” This hymn is a shining example of the truth that our pioneers knew and lived. I stumbled onto this hymn when I began researching the heritage hymns of the Reformation Movement. I was delighted to see doctrine proclaimed with such strength and concern for the body of believers.

The term "must" signifies that this is not a choice. Often we hear the message of holiness being regarded as just a suggestion for a better life. This hymn reinforces the fact that holiness is a necessity for every Christian to be close to God, not something to be taken lightly.

When singing this hymn we have a great reminder that we need to be completely sold out to our faith. Often people feel that they are fine to only giveGod part of their lives. We see the dangers of lukewarm “Christianity” lurking in today’s congregations. Through this song we are able to remind others that “being 99% Christian is being 100% lost” (quoted from a young man in my youth group). We need to be completely Sanctified for his use.

Holiness is key to the Christian faith and lifestyle. Today's contemporary gospelmusic neglects the importance of this. It often includes verses tossing theword holiness aroundwithout describing what that would look like. The lyrics to this hymn gives the singer/listener a good foundation of what holiness is.

Hebrews12:14 makes the declaration that without holiness no one will see the Lord. If this be the case, if Sanctification is part of God's plan for us, then we should expound it in every way possible, including song.
